Why I Stayed, What I Learned, and What Millions of People Involved with Sociopaths Need to Know
Mary Jo Buttafuoco's anonymous life as a suburban wife and mother ended in May 1992, when she was shot in the head on her own front porch. The "Long Island Lolita" saga sparked a media frenzy that has not died to this day.
As the years passed and Mary Jo steadfastly stood by her man, one question lingered in the minds of women everywhere Why did she stay for so long?
In Getting It Through My Thick Skull, Mary Jo finally answers that question fully and convincingly. The answer is simple, yet it took almost three decades of turmoil She was married to a sociopath. And while Mary Jo's face and story are known all over the world, she's just one of countless women who have become similarly enmeshed with a partner who wreaks utter havoc on the lives around them.
Using her own experiences, Mary Jo helps listeners determine if they are indeed involved with a sociopath and offers hope and help for them through her tragic and triumphant life lessons. In addition, readers will be inspired by Mary Jo's comeback A true reclamation and re-creation of her life from the inside out.

when I even saw that a "Buttafuoco" wrote a book, as you may be at this moment. Salacious, juicy, fill in the blanks with dirt, at best I thought. Then I read Mary Jo's life story, and I cried for her. What a remarkably strong, honest, kind, devoted, courageous, long-suffering woman she was. The book is extremely well-written by a lovely Mary Jo, in every respect. (She clearly paid attention in her English classes at parochial school back east). The book builds to its crescendo, written in a "valley-to-peak-to-valley" method (think of a mountain) by a bullet in Mary Jo's brain, mid-way through. She outlines her own struggles, after being gunned down on her own porch by a curious ring of her door bell, while painting a white bench in her own backyard.
This is a woman who was overlooked, not taken seriously, and removed from the legalities in our judicial system, with the powers-that-be making decisions for her with regard to Amy Fisher. And to be unloved and disrespected by a husband who had no regard for, and was incapable of, (as a sociopath) love for his wife whatsoever. And the physical pain she endured with a bullet in her skull? Indescribable. I cannot fathom this level of torment in her treatment.
I cried with joy at the end when she found love, three thousand miles from home. I applaud her, and am sad that I never had a chance to meet Mary Jo, or be her friend, as I would have been there for her along her entire journey. Should Mary Jo ever read this, I hope she realizes what an amazing wife, mother, friend, sister, daughter she is and has been.
A story truly with a happy ending, though she paid dearly to reach a hard-won level of contentment. Mary Jo made me a better person with this memoir. I hope she basks in the "nothing" that comes from being loved, truly loved, by Stu, without drama or loss or mistrust. Godspeed, Mary Jo. Thank you for your amazing story.

Getting It Through My Thick Skull (Audible Audio Edition) Mary Jo Buttafuoco Audible Studios Books Reviews
I always wanted to shake Mary Jo when she defended the piece of excrement she was married to. Maybe it was for the sake of the kids. But why give your daughter the message that Dad can have an underage girlfriend, and it's okay? She had to be blind or stubborn or both.
Well, it's good to see that she was able to get on with her life, while Amy and Joey lost all semblance of respectability.
Thank you, Mary Jo, for your honesty. I too lived with a sociopath and finally got it through my head who/what I was dealing with and got out. I stayed way too long. Don't be fooled, they don't change. Sad news, but the sooner your internalize it the better. If I'd stayed, I would have died.
I always did wonder why she stayed with that idiot! I kept up with this story from Day 1! Mary Jo answered every question I had in this book!
I thought her book was well written & a real page turner! I never wanted to put it down! Totally enjoyed it! But honestly, I always thought that she was stronger in real life than she actually was!
I am so happy she wrote this & shared her story with the rest of us! I wish her a long happy life—sans Joey!!!
This book is enlightening for anyone who remembers the nasty headlines about the Buttafuoco saga. I always thought Joey was behind the attempted murder, but now I know differently.
Congrats to Mary Jo for being such a strong and courageous survivor. Your book will no doubt inspire anyone living in similar circumstances.
I had a big brother who was much like Joey. A big talker who had trouble with the law, and was always scheming some way or another. Sadly he ruined his health through drug addiction.
This book is a great read for anyone who remembers Mary Jo's story. I had always thought Joey put Amy up to her actions, now I have a better understanding of what really happened.
Mary Jo is a very strong and determined individual. Congratulations for telling your truth May Jo, you and your children deserve all the happiness in the world.
If you are contemplating the purchase of this book, please buy it - it is NOT tabloid in any sense of the word. It is a true lesson in life; one woman's tale of what it is like to be married to a man who is manipulative, blames the world for his own transgressions, and and leaves a path of destruction in his wake by his manipulation and convincing behavior that causes one to doubt oneself.
Mary Jo Buttafuoco is to be commended for writing this book and for being so brutally frank and honest as to why she stayed in this marriage, it's effects on her children and her own shortcomings as well. Kudos also to her co-writer, Julia McCarron, who weaves cohesion to this tale and gives us an exacting timeframe of the events in the lives of the Buttafuoco family.
Any one of us, can be married to or have a partner who is a sociopath, and there is no cure except to run. Mary Jo does not ask for sympathy in this book, nor to drum up animosity for Joey or Amy; but rather, she chooses to relate a life story, with life lessons for us all. Please read this book, I highly recommend it, as it could happen to anybody - male or female.
